Parkvale gardens

Parkvale Gardens is set in the tranquil rural landscape of the central Wairarapa, New Zealand. The 20 acre property is dominated by a big and soaring sky, framed on its western horizon by the Tararua Ranges and low, rolling hills out east.

This open grassland environment has an ephemeral stream running down its spine, which feeds into the Parkvale Stream. A riparian restoration project was started soon after the property was purchased in 2015, planted with eco-sourced New Zealand natives, creating habitat for birds, insects and shading the watercourse, improving the home for Eels and other aquatic life. This planting is added to every year, some naturally as it re-seeds itself, but we give it a hand as well.

About 15 acres of the site are grazed by a local CSA beef farmer practising regenerative farming techniques to produce local, sustainable and organic food. The rest is set aside for regeneration and gardens.

As the streamside planting establishes itself, the shelter it creates has helped with the development of other gardens adjacent to this spine. These gardens follow our naturalistic approach to garden design, and serve as resilient and evocative spaces, embracing a diverse array of flora from various corners of the world. Each season brings a dynamic display, inviting visitors to connect with nature in an immersive and ever-changing manner.
